Dear Rufus,

I am sure you are familiar with the political biographies of Robert Caro, which very slightly overlap with your own early career in Washington City. To the careful student these books have a great deal to teach about American law. At this moment I have one very specific thing in mind. In “Means of Ascent” Lyndon Johnson files his candidacy THROUGH AN ATTORNEY. That is what I ask you to do for me. I have diligently prepared myself through these years of persecution to make my bid for Governor. Mr. Stein is a bourgeois criminal who is more “National Socialist” than North Carolina Democrat. Mr. Robinson is also an authoritarian who lacks the necessary intellectual qualifications. I don’t have to be perfect to be the best choice, and it seems to me I’m in the right place at the right time. The precedent of Nelson Mandela in South Africa is altogether relevant.

Should we “miss the filing period”, the struggle will continue through other vectors, but this is the moment to make a decisive move. If you have to say something to the press, you may say: “Dawson Gage’s bid for Governor is grounded in what our State Constitution calls ‘the recurrence to fundamental principles’. His purpose is to restore the Constitution of North Carolina, to reestablish the Rule of Law, and pursue a range of creative reforms aimed at addressing the many problems which afflict the lives of the People. His appeal is to the People of all 100 counties without regard to party, class, race, or religion. Together we can save North Carolina, and act as an example unto the whole world. Esse quam videri.”

That’s that. Nothing to lose and everything to gain, Rufus.

Yours truly,

Dawson Gage.
